HISTORY OF THE NIKOLA CVEJIĆ COMPETITION
At the beginning of 1996. several students of Nikola Cvejić launched an initiative and action to establish a fund that should protect his name and work from oblivion, as well as help the development of musical culture in Serbia.
Given that the Cvejićs lived in Ruma since 1920, that Professor Nikola Cvejić had numerous concerts in that city since 1924. and that he was buried in 1987. in the family tomb in Ruma, his students proposed that this fund be established by the Ruma Municipal Assembly together with the National Theater from Belgrade and the Faculty of Music Arts from Belgrade. Thus, in 1997. these institutions together with the Music School "Toša Andrejević" from Ruma, the Academy of Music from Novi Sad, UMUS and the Association of Associations of Music and Ballet Pedagogues of Serbia founded the "Nikola and Marica Cvejić" Fund.
The fund aimed to organize the competition, which it did on November 5, 1997, and today, for twenty years, it has been functioning very successfully, and bears the name of the famous opera singer and pedagogue, the International Competition of Solo Singers "Nikola Cvejić".
In the jubilee twentieth anniversary, the newly formed Association "Nikola and Marica Cvejić" continued to take care of the organization of the Peuzim Competition.
In order to improve and modernize the program, cooperation has been established with the Serbian National Theater from Novi Sad, which will award special prizes to the laureate or other selected award-winning singers.
